Synthetic Cities
“Synthetic Cities” is a photographic journey through our environment as perceived from within the interfaces of our connected devices.
Google Street 3D maps are uploaded in JavaScript and explored in a flâneur-like fashion, capturing synthetic photographs from digital wanderings across these new urban landscapes. Though algorithmically stitched and mediated by screens, these places reveal unexpected stillness, emptiness, and distortions.
The atmosphere — calm and subtly dystopian — evokes the spirit of early urban photographers. Yet here, the streets are emptied of people, frozen in time, haunted by compression artifacts and algorithmic ghosts.
Atget’s Paris, the Florence of the Alinari brothers, and other iconic places reappear under this futuristic lens, provoking both disorientation and reflection on our technological tomorrow.
